Bicycle Project Brief

Research homework project set over a number of weeks.

Bicycles in this country are used for fun. In poorer Third World countries, bicycles are mainly used for transporting people and goods. Many of the bicycles sold in this country are made in the poorer Asian countries such as Indonesia. Halfords sells more bicycles than any other shop. Helmets are a good safety idea as the head is easily damaged in accidents.
Use the Argos catalogue and Encarta as sources of information.

Project Content.

The following 12 sections of work must all be produced and presented in the exact order given.  As many will only be one or two lines long, DO NOT start each section on a new page. Plan the layout of each page before doing anything.

1.	Front cover	This page must contain your name, form, technology group and year.
2.	Contents page	List all the 12 sections in the order given and only include the words of the 12 headings shown here.  Show the page numbers aligned vertically on the right and the section numbers on the left.  List all sources of information at the bottom of the page.
3.	History	Write a brief history of the bicycle.
4.	Purpose	LIST different purposes bicycles can be used for in any parts of the world.
5.	Product Chart	Draw up a chart for three different bicycles (including one child's bike). List the following features vertically.  Manufacturer's name, Bike's name, Wheel size, Frame size, Number of speeds, Types of brakes, Type of wheels and Price.
6.	Bike Pictures	Layout the pictures of ten different bikes (including three child's bikes), GROUPED by frame sizes. (i.e. 29, 35.5, 51, 61 & 66cm).
7.	Helmet Definition	Give a definition of a bicycle safety helmet. Use sketches.
8.	Helmet Sizes	Draw a BAR GRAPH showing how different helmets can fit a range of heads sizes. Use five adult's and child's helmets.
9.	Features	List five features a bicycle helmet must have.
10.	Adjusting Helmets	How do you alter a bicycle safety helmet to fit different sizes of heads?
11.	Safety	Why do you use or not use a bicycle safety helmet?
12.	Helmet Features	What BUILT-IN safety feature can be added to make a bicycle safety helmet safer to use in the dark?

Project Presentation.

All work must be presented on bordered A4 plain white paper in either landscape or portrait.   Each new section must start on a new page with a heading.  All the pages must be fixed together and presented with care.  Do not put the pages in plastic wallets or a ring binder as it makes marking very difficult.

Project Marking.

You will be given marks for:-

1. Overall quality of the presentation of your work.
2. Neatness of your writing and drawings and the use of pictures and colour.
3. All pages must use the same style of lettering, borders, colours etc.
4. Depth of research in all sections.
5. Content of each page.
6. Your ability to answer the questions in the correct way.
