Torch Project Brief

Research homework project set over a number of weeks.

Everybody has used a torch at sometime or other for many different reasons.  This project asks you to look in depth at torches, what they are and how they are used. You will have to draw pictures of torches and show what they are made from and how they work. Finally, you will have to question other people (not your classmates) about their torches.
The object of this task is for you to learn to research a topic.   Seek help at any time as this is not a test of your knowledge.   Follow the instructions carefully and, at the end, use a highlighter and cross out each item to check that you have included everything.
Use the Argos catalogue and Encarta as sources of information.

Project Content.

The following 8 sections of work must all be produced and presented in the exact order given.  Each section must start on a new page.

1.Front cover This page must contain your name, form, technology group and year.
2.Contents page List all the 8 sections in the order given and only include the words of the 8 headings shown here.  Show the page numbers aligned vertically on the right and the section numbers on the left.   List all sources of information at the bottom of the page.
3.Description Describe what a torch is and what it can be used for and how the shape has changed over a period of time.  What fuel was used to power torches before batteries were invented?
4.Product research Cut out pictures of torches and stick them down and add a few notes. Minimum 6.
5.Construction Draw a picture of a torch showing all the different component parts. Label all the parts. The best way to show the inside of the torch is to use a cut-away drawing.
6.Material List the materials used to make all the parts of the torch.
7.Circuit Draw the circuit diagram for a torch showing all the electrical components.   Use the correct electrical symbols.
8.Market research Ask people questions about the usage of their torches, the brand names, how much they cost and how often they use them.  Produce your answers in the form of pie graphs.  (not bar charts or tables).

Project Presentation.

All work must be presented on bordered A4 plain white paper in either landscape or portrait.   Each new section must start on a new page with a heading.  All the pages must be fixed together and presented with care.  Do not put the pages in plastic wallets or a ring binder as it makes marking very difficult.

Project Marking.

You will be given marks for:-

  1. Overall quality of the presentation of your work.
  2. Neatness of your writing and drawings and the use of pictures and colour.
  3. All pages must use the same style of lettering, borders, colours etc.
  4. Depth of research in all sections.
  5. Content of each page.
  6. Your ability to answer the questions in the correct way.
